The England and Wales party gained its first Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in 1999, when Caroline Lucas (South East England) and Jean Lambert (London) were elected on the occasion of proportional representation being used for the first time in European Parliament elections in the UK. In 2010, Caroline Lucas (now a former leader of the party) became its first Member of the Westminster Parliament (MP), representing the constituency of Brighton Pavilion.
